The two-part mini-series is a "Romeo and Juliet" story set in a rural Australian town. Marking Time traces Hal's (Abe Forsythe) journey from boy to man over the period of one year. At the outset, the town and the country are intoxicated with the spirit of the Olympics, and the Centenary of Federation. Hal gets his licence, first car, the right to drink, the right to vote, and falls in love with Randa (Bojana Novakovic), a young Afghani refugee. But there is a shifting of consciousness in the town and the nation about refugees, border protection and their place in the world. Hal's heart is broken when he realises that his town is one in which he no longer belongs

Quotes from Others
• "It's great because you are using a Romeo and Juliet story, but you are not appealing to our generation on a political level. The politics is there for the context of it, but you are appealing to them from a very, very emotional and personalised level. A love story. You can't get much more personal than that."
- Bojana Novakovic (Co-star)
From Critics
• "Marking Time presents no heroes and no villains, he argues, just differing degrees of awareness. It's almost a neutral position, all the characters are likeable. Everyone has an attitude, everyone has an opinion. All there are are different degrees of being informed and aware."
- Kylie Miller, The Age
• "A beautiful coming-of-age love story, mostly it's a fable about journeys."
- Kylie Miller, The Age
• "They are beautifully drawn characters, familiar to those who've lived in a country town...Abbie Cornish is the fragile, damaged shop girl, Tracey."
