In order to get closer to Dan, Candy starts shooting up. Their passionate relationship then alternates between bursts of ecstatic oblivion and bouts of despair and self-destruction. Hooked as much on heroin as one another, their story becomes a love triangle - a boy, a girl, and a drug.

Quotes from Abbie Cornish
• "There's no bullshit with Heath. He's very open and generous. I knew from the moment I auditioned that if I got the opportunity to work with him, it would be extraordinary."
• "At the start Dan and Candy seem to swim in this feeling like a pool. They get in and out of body of heroin, but as the film unfolds the body of water gets bigger and murkier and there are no edges for either of them to lift themeselves out."
• "Every character I play has parts of me in it. But Candy, she is so free, she could do anything with her life."
• "I've just always had in my head this idea of the most amazing film that I was ever going to be in and it was Candy. I remember I read the script and, you know, it's not like I imagined the exact film or anything. But I knew what sort of character I wanted to ultimately play and what sort of struggle I wanted to portray."
• "I see Heidi and Candy as being completely different. Heidi's bubble is probably this big..." She squishes her thumb and forefinger together to make her point. "And she was completely within that bubble - very shy, very timid, and super-sensitive. Then you get Candy. Candy is just fearless. Her bubble is gigantic. Her vision is far... she's so raw. Candy knows sex. She knows her sexuality. She knows what lovemaking is. Heidi has no idea. Candy is more of a woman, I think. Heidi is more like a girl."

• "Ledger and Cornish are so good it's possible to forget the familiarity of the script. These are two tragic characters trapped in a decaying orbit. "
- James Berardinelli, Reel Views
• "Still, for a druggie movie, Candy is surprisingly dynamic and involving, and Armfield refrains from moralizing to closely observe the parallels between different forms of intoxication. Hovering on the sidelines of the genre, it declines to turn the grind of addiction into a grim metaphor for life and settles for telling an intimate story about a marriage felled by an insidious force."
